FootballJose Mourinho: AS Roma Boss Reportedly Considers Resignation After Loss to AC MIlan
- Jose Mourinho is surprisingly reportedly ready to 'take a step back' at AS Roma
- Roma went 3-1 down to AC Milan, extending their winless run in the Serie A to three games
- Mourinho's contract expires at the end of this season, with no extension in sight
Jose Mourinho is said to be ready to walk away from the AS Roma job following their insipid 3-1 loss to AC Milan on January 14.
Roma were outclassed at the San Siro Stadium, with Mourinho only watching from afar as he served his suspension after picking up a red card against Atalanta last weekend.
Yacine Adli opened the scoring for Stefano Pioli's men before Olivier Giroud scored one and set up one in the second half. His assist to Theo Hernandez was an audacious backheel that left his fellow Frenchman ample space to release a rasping shot past Mile Svilar.
Mourinho to resign?
The defeat was Roma's seventh of the campaign as they dropped into 9th place on the log. A report by Roma Press indicates that Mourinho communicated to his players that he was willing to step back from the job given that they didn't seem to follow his instructions of late.
However, sacking the Portuguese boss might be easy for the Giallorossi, given the financial ruin they are in. Terminating Mourinho's contract before it lapses at the end of the season will mean sending him away with a hefty severance package. He had similar deals during his time at Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United, as reported by La Reppublica.
Roma's next two games against Verona and Salernitana will be do-or-die for the former Real Madrid manager.
AC Milan fans boo Mourinho
Sports Brief also reported that Mourinho endured a tough evening in his absentia on the touchline, with Milan fans booing him when his face appeared on the big screens.
The 60-year-old was once a manager of Milan's city's rivals, Inter Milan, where he had a highly successful stint, including a Champions League win in 2010.
