The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations suffered a major setback after it lost its TV coverage worldwide on the Senegal game vs Gambia on Monday afternoon.

The Teranga Lions began their title defence at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium with head coach Aliou Cisse including the newly wedded Sadio Mane in his line-up.

Gambia forced a save from Edouard Mendy in the first minute before the tide turned. Senegal needed only four minutes to break the deadlock after Mane teed up Pape Gueye for the opening goal of the game.

What happened to the Senegal vs Gambia TV feed

The game was, however disrupted for TV viewers when the feed stopped in the 27th minute. A quick check online revealed that all the users to whom CAF had sold the rights in different regions of the world were complaining about the loss of the TV feed.

A statement by BeIn Sports on X read;

"Due to a satellite problem, the broadcast of the match is temporarily interrupted."

The incident drew widespread reactions online, with Andrew Brotherton saying;

"Is Senegal vs Gambia actually happening?? Looks like both the Sky Sports and BeIN Sports broadcasts are knackered."

@NaylorBen said:

"Senegal vs Gambia TV feed went down and BBC stopped updating their latest score."

Meanwhile, at the stadium, Gambia were reduced to 10 men after Ebou Adams was given a direct red card. just before half-time.

After the break, 20-year-old Lamine Camara announced himself on the global stage, scoring twice to condemn the Scorpions to their heaviest defeat in AFCON history.

The Metz midfielder got his first in the 52nd minute before scoring a goal of the tournament contender four minutes from time. The assist was just as beautiful, with Iliman Ndiaye turning around Gambian defenders before setting up Camara, who unleashed a ferocious shot into the top corner.

Aliou Cisse's side play Cameroon next as Gambia take on Guinea.

Biggest upsets in AFCON history

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Ghana were shocked by Cape Verde 2-1 in their opening game at AFCON 2023 on January 14.

The defeat is among the biggest upsets in AFCON history with the Black Stara chances of ending their title drought taking a major hit.
