  • Ralf Rangnick coached Manchester United for six months after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
  • The German tactician spotted some players for the club to sign despite being interim
  • The Red Devils failed to land any of those targets, and they are doing well elsewhere

Ralf Rangnick was in charge of Manchester United for six months after the club took the hard decision to part ways with former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November 2021.

Rangnick coached the team till the end of the season and achieved European football - the UEFA Europa League for the following season before Erik ten Hag took over.

Per the official statement when he was hired, he was supposed to remain in the consultancy role for two years after the club decided he would not continue, and he took the Austria national team job instead.

Sports Brief looks at six players he wanted the club to sign and where they are now, as first analysed by Planet Football.

Players Rangnick wanted at Man Utd

1. Christopher Nkunku

The German director worked with Nkunku during their time at RB Leipzig. He recommended him to United, but Chelsea beat them to the France international, securing an agreement a year before the versatile attacker joined. His quality is evident, but injuries have hampered him this season.

2. Josko Gvardiol

One of the best young defenders at RB Leipzig. Many top European clubs, including United, were after his signature based on recommendations from Rangnick. He signed for Manchester City instead and is gradually settling into life in England.

3. Alvaro Morata

The striker has a reputation for missing chances and ‘sleeping’ in offside positions. The former Schalke director wanted him to replace the inconsistent Anthony Martial, but it never materialised. He is back with his former club, Atletico Madrid, and is one of Diego Simeone's most important players.

4. Luis Diaz

The interim boss wanted the Colombian winger at Old Trafford before Liverpool scooped him. He has been an important player for Jurgen Klopp, though he had injury issues last season.

5. Dusan Vlahovic

Rangnick first spotted him and wanted him at United before the Serbian forward moved from Fiorentina to Juventus. Rumours linking him with a Premier League move have continued, with Arsenal and Chelsea lurking.

6. Erling Haaland

The biggest one. The Norwegian was also one of the players Solskjaer wanted the club to sign even before he moved to Borussia Dortmund. City eventually won the race, and he helped them to a treble in his first season.

5 players Solskjaer wanted at Man Utd

Sports Brief previously reported on five players Solskjaer wanted at Man Utd, but the hierarchy failed to get for him during his trophyless three-year stint at the club.

At the top of the list was Haaland, with whom Solskjaer was familiar from Norway—Jude Bellingham, who is lighting it up at Real Madrid.
