- Ghana, amongst other nations, were dealt a huge defeat
- A mascot of the Ghanaian national team has been subject to fan trolling
The scripts of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have been nothing short of exhilarating.
The tournament, which kicked off with host Ivory Coast securing a statement victory against Guinea Bissau, has so far seen many of the continent’s football giants falter in their respective matches.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a draw by Equatorial Guinea, the Pharaohs of Egypt needed a 92nd-minute Mohamed Salah penalty to salvage a draw against lowly ranked Mozambique and crowning it all Ghana capitulating in the final minutes against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.
The fixture, which started for the Ghanaians on a mixed note, eventually saw Chris Hughton’s team progressively finding their rhythm as the game progressed.
They managed to secure a crucial equaliser when Jordan Ayew set up defender Alexander Djiku from a corner kick.
However, despite the seemingly positive turn of events for the Black Stars, a costly defensive mistake by Mohammed Salisu led to a late goal from Garry Rodrigues just two minutes before full-time. The unexpected turn left many Black Stars fans in disbelief and some expressing distrust at the unfolding events.
Amidst the flurry of reactions that followed, one particular mascot's response stood out, leaving many in stitches.

The Ghanaian national team's mascot, adorned in team colours, was spotted carrying a smoking terracotta pot on his head, visibly shocked by the unfolding events.

FootballA viral video captured the mascot venting his frustrations, expressing how carrying the terracotta pot had given him a headache, only for the Ghanaian national team to suffer a disgraceful defeat against the underdog Cape Verde.
While the defeat and the mascot's animated reaction have provided amusement for many, especially fans of other nations, it doesn't get any easier for the four-time AFCON winners. They now face the challenge of securing a victory in their next match against Egypt.

Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted Super Eagles of Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro went spiritual during his post-match press conference following the draw against Equatorial Guinea.
The 63-year-old attributed the result on the night to being the will of God.
