Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan’s strange reaction before and after conceding a late equalizer in his nation’s AFCON opener has gone viral.

The Mambas opened their 2023 AFCON campaign against the record winners of the competition Egypt, who are looking for their first title since 2010.

The Pharaohs broke the deadlock at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny through Mostafa Mohamed’s second-minute strike assisted by Mohamed Salah.

Despite trailing at halftime, Mozambique showed bravery going forward, and it eventually paid off as Witiness Quembo levelled matters in the 55th minute.

The stadium was then stunned into silence as, three minutes later, Mozambique took a shock lead through Clesio Bauque’s close-range finish.

It almost looked like The Mambas would pull of one of the upsets of the tournament, but Egypt was handed a lifeline in the second minute of added time as Mostapha was fouled by Domingoz Macandza.

Ernan’s antics

As Salah geared up to take the penalty, cameras panned to Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan, whose antics were strange, to say the least.

The 25-year-old looked Salah in the eye and was all smiles despite his side being seconds away from dropping two precious points in a tough group.

Ernan was seen pumping his fists while looking at the Liverpool star, a tactic typically used by goalkeepers to intimidate and possibly put off penalty-takers.

But Salah exhibited nerves of steel to slot the penalty home via the upright, and despite conceding, Ernan was still smiling as the Egyptians wheeled away in celebration.

Perhaps he was a bit star-struck to be sharing the stage with one of the best players in the world at the moment.

What next for Mozambique?

In the other result, Cape Verde pulled an upset as they beat Ghana 2-1 thanks to a late goal by Gary Rordigues.

The win took Cape Verde to top spot in Group B, while Mozambique and Egypt occupy second and third place after their stalemate.

The Mambas’ next game is against Cape Verde on January 19.
