  • Mozambique were on the brink of pulling off the biggest surprise at AFCON 2023
  • The Mambas scored twice in three second-half minutes to cancel Egypt's early goal
  • Mohamed Salah's penalty in the additional minutes rescued a point for the Pharaohs

The Mambas of Mozambique neatly pulled off the biggest upset of the AFCON 2023 so far after drawing Egypt 2-2 in the opening game of Group B at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.

Seven times, African champions Egypt started on the front foot with an early strike against Mozambique and looked like they would run riot against the East African country.

Mohamed Salah miscontrolled the ball, allowing Mostafa Mohamed to pick it off him. he turned brilliantly and struck home to give an early lead to the Pharaohs, the fastest goal at the tournament in the 94th second.

The North African country could have doubled their lead in the 34th minute, but Mahmoud Trezeguet struck the outside foot of the post, and the ball rolled out.

The Mozambiquans threatened in the 37th minute after their wingers, Gildo Vilanculos and Witi Quembo, combined, but Mohamed El-Shenaway ran the length of the post to make a brilliant save, and the last touch came from Mohamed Hamdi.

Mozambique’s second-half turnaround

The Mambas came out in the second half with more determination and intensity, and they were rewarded with two quick goals to upset the North African powerhouse.

Witi Quembo pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half with a powerful header off Dominingos Macandza’s cross, beating El-Shenaway at his near post.

Their relentlessness was rewarded with a second goal three minutes after Clesio Bauque drove the ball from the midfield, skipping past Ahmed Hegazy and slotting past the goalkeeper in the one-on-one situation.

Egypt had plenty of attempts to level, including a big miss from Salah, who sent a volley wide of the goalpost after confusion in the Mozambican defence.

Mozambique appeared to be on the brink of history, but Egypt were awarded a penalty after Domingos was adjudged to have fouled Mostafa Mohamed. Salah converted the penalty to save his country’s blushes.

Trezeguet outlines Egypt's goal

Sports Brief reported on Trezeguet outlining Egypt's goal at the AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast after losing two finals – 2017 to Cameroon in Gabon and 2021 to Senegal in Cameroon.

Trezeguet admitted luck being against them in those tournaments but hopes they can take it one step further this time. but was honest to understand that no team is a pushover in African football.
