The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is up and running after Ivory Coast's comfortable 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau

The top-ranked teams on the continent, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Cameroon and Egypt, have been tipped to go all the way to the final.

All these teams have won the title before, with Senegal winning the last edition. The Atlas Lions are widely regarded as favourites because of their legendary run to the semi-final of the 2022 World Cup, per FIFA. They last won the title in 1976.

Egypt have an experienced squad and Mohamed Salah, one of Africa's greatest players, in their ranks. They are looking to end their 14-year trophy drought.

Rulani Mokwena AFCON predictions

Mokwena wants to see Bafana Bafana win it. He says he hopes South Africa and Namibia make it to the final because Mamelodi Sundowns has players on both teams.

He named three favourites of the tournament.

“Nigeria will always be favorites because they have several top players and they are never pushovers when it comes to the tournament. Morocco is another team I believe will do well because they have a great coach, a great squad and we saw their exploits at the last World Cup. Egypt can also be considered a big threat in the competition as they have the pedigree and know-how to win the title. I also tip Ghana and Senegal to be strong contenders and I think Ivory Coast will also make it to the last 8,” he told the club website.

Any of the teams Mokwena mentioned are capable of winning it, and fans will get a clearer picture as the tournament progresses.

Teams with the most to prove at AFCON

Sports Brief earlier reported on the list of African national teams with the most to prove in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite having some of the best African talent over the years, a team like Morocco have struggled to make a mark in Africa's biggest football tournament.

Ghana and Nigeria are the other teams that will be expected to go all the way since they have produced some of Africa's best players.
