- The Africa Cup of Nations is set to herald the continent’s footballing scenes
- Nigeria’s Super Eagles have continued to suffer injuries ahead of the competitions
- A former Nigerian international has called for calm ahead of the competition’s commencement
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) frenzy is palpable as a host of teams are eager to leave their mark on the competition.
The Super Eagles are among the teams looking to go the distance at the AFCON, and the team's confidence is fuelled by a wealth of attacking talents available to the three times Cup of Nations winners.
However, the Super Eagles have been hit with a plethora of setbacks lately, with a string of injuries hit to combative midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, highly rated forward Victor Boniface and more recently, a meniscus injury suffered by another forward, Sadiq Umar.
These unforeseen challenges have instilled a sense of scepticism among many fans of the Nigerian national team, causing some to reconsider the likelihood of the West African nation securing victory in the tournament.
However, as the team prepares for its opening fixture against Equatorial Guinea, a former Super Eagles star and Nigerian football legend has urged calm and emphasised the importance of unwavering support for the team despite the adversity of injuries.
Super Eagles legend on injuries crisis
Former Enyimba International forward Victor Ezeji has called for calm ahead of the Super Eagles AFCON showdown.
As reported by PunchSports, Ezeji addressed concerns about the current spate of injuries affecting Peseiro's team, emphasising,
"I don’t think there is a crisis because the other guys they have called up are good strikers as well. It is just that the Super Eagles have not capitalised on someone like Onuachu’s potential; he has good height, and most of his goals are with his head.

FootballHowever, whenever he plays with the Super Eagles, wide players like (Samuel) Chukwueze and Moses Simon fail to deliver the crosses for him."
The 42-year-old concluded by underlining the importance of maintaining composure, asserting that having Victor Osimhen available is enough for the Eagles to go the distance.
Napoli forward Osimhen, who netted 31 times in 39 games for his Serie A club in 2023, as reported by Fotmob, stands as the sole fit centre forward currently at the disposal of the Super Eagles ahead of their opening fixture against the Nzalang Nacional.
Dosu Joseph makes AFCON prediction
Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted that the former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dosu Joseph gave his predictions ahead of the AFCON in Ivory Coast.
The Atlanta Olympic Gold winner tipped Napoli’s Victor Osimhen to clinch the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
The 50-year-old subsequently predicted the Super Eagles would go on to win the competition.
