  • Bayern Munich forward Eric Choupo-Moting will miss AFCON 2023
  • The experienced forward could not make the final Cameroon squad
  • Choupo-Moting father has accused FECAFOOT of unfairness

Abidjan- Cote d'Ivoire. Father of Bayern Munich forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Just Moting has vented his anger at the Cameroonian Football Federation for dropping his son from the AFCON squad.

The Bayern Munich star was initially named in the provisional squad but surprisingly missed out on the final team for the tournament in Ivory Coast.

Choupo-Moting, who has scored 20 goals in 73 appearances for the Indomitable Lions, has been an important player for Cameroon since making his debut.

“I was a little surprised. Éric Maxim was also surprised. I don't know why he wasn't selected. He doesn't know why either. We have no proof. But that doesn't mean I don't want to talk. However, we tried to follow everything. He was pre-selected," Just Moting told Radio Balafa, as quoted by 13 Football.

FECAFOOT had requested the player's outfits and shoe sizes as part of activities before the tournament itself.

"Before, we asked him to send what needed to be sent for outfits, and shoe sizes... If a player like Éric Maxim Choupo-Moting is preselected, that means that it is clear that he will be selected," added the player's father.
"Two days before Rigobert Song's list came out, we learned through social networks and newspapers that he might not be selected."

According to the forward's father, there were behind-the-door negotiations between the coach and people in authority to drop the player.

“Then, we added that there are negotiations underway and that at the end of these, we will see if he is selected or not. Knowing that Maxim and I were not informed, who was negotiating? This means that, among the decision-makers, there were some who were for his selection and others against him," continued the father.
"Every coach wants to have the best players. Unless they are undisciplined. But nothing shows that Choupo-Moting could harm the team. It's clear that the coach wanted Choupo to come, but it was the others who didn't want him. The coach wanted to make it clear that he could not do otherwise."

Cameroon have been drawn in Group C alongside Senegal, Guinea and Gambia, as reported by Sporting News.

Song explains Choupo-Moting exclusion

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Cameroon coach, Rigobert Song has explained the absence of Bayern Munich star Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from his squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The former PSG forward was a surprise exclusion from the squad following his experience with the national team.

Choupo-Moting was part of the team that finished third when Cameroon hosted the tournament last year. He also featured for Cameroon at the 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cup.
