Former Super Eagles shot-stopper Greg Etafia has discussed the goalkeeping issue in the Nigerian team ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The Nigeria national team has struggled to have a stand-out goalkeeper since Vincent Enyeama retired from international duty.

Jose Peseiro is going to the competition with three goalkeepers, Francis Uzoho, Stanley Nwabili, and Olorunleke Ojo.

In an interview with iDiskiTimes, Etafia shared his thoughts on the issue, claiming Uzoho should be more comfortable in goal for the Eagles.

"Uzoho has been in the national team for a long time. By now, he should be progressing regarding how comfortable he will be in goal," he said.
"Unfortunately, the likes of Vincent Enyeama left a big step up for others to fill, and every goalkeeper that came will always be under pressure."

The former TS Galaxy goalkeeping coach also spoke about adding South African-based Nwabili to the squad.

"We need to get the cool-headed people who have been there before. Nwabili has done well with Chippa; I think he is on seven clean sheets in the games (15 leagues) he has played; he has saved Chippa for many games," he added.

Nigeria are drawn alongside Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea in the competition. Jose Peseiro's will kick off their campaign with a game against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14.

AFCON 2023: Ideye calls for reduced expectations

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has called for less expectations amid the growing injuries faced by the Nigerian squad for AFCON 2023.

The AFCON 2013 winner took to his handle on X to air his views on what is looking to be an injury-ravaged campaign for the West African nation.

The three-time African champions are currently with only one fit centre-forward ahead of their first game in the competition against Equatorial Guinea.
