FootballMohamed Salah: AFCON Bound Egypt Star Set to Snub Saudi Pro League Move for Liverpool Stay, Report
- Mohamed Salah is set to stay at Liverpool despite interest from the Saudi Pro League
- The former Chelsea star's current contract with the Merseyside Reds will end in 2025
- Salah is with the Egyptian national team in Ivory Coast for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations
Egyptian international Mohamed Salah is set to snub a move to the Saudi Pro League for English Premier League side Liverpool in the summer, according to reports.
The former AS Roma forward has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield since last summer but still insists on staying with the Merseyside Reds.
Several Saudi Pro League sides have shown interest in bringing him to the Middle East, like football top stars Cristiano Ronaldo and former teammates Sadio Mane and Neymar.
According to a report by the Egyptian publication Kingfut, Ittihad Jeddah have shown strong interest in pricing the 31-year-old away from the Reds.
A popular journalist for The Athletic, David Ornstein, confirmed that Salah is not yet done in the Premier League despite his current contract ending in the summer of 2025.
"Some have suggested to me that Salah still has the appetite to continue competing at the top level of European football with Liverpool, so a departure is not certain," he said.
The Liverpool star is currently with the Egypt national team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. The former Chelsea star is hoping to lead the Pharaohs to their eighth AFCON title after losing in the finals against Senegal in 2021.
AFCON: Salah could play an unfamiliar role
Sports Brief earlier reported that Mohamed Salah could find himself in an unfamiliar role at the AFCON as Egypt manager Rui Vitoria hinted at trying out the Liverpool star in a new position.
The 31-year-old, after leaving England, was integrated seamlessly into the team by Vitoria and was on the scoresheet in their warm-up game against Tanzania before travelling to Ivory Coast.
Egypt has been placed in Group B in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, a group that also includes Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde.
