  • Nigeria's ambition at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is to win
  • The Super Eagles have underwhelmed in the past editions
  • Their best player, Victor Osimhen, wants to make his country proud in Ivory Coast

Nigeria have won one Africa Cup of Nations title since 1994.

Africa's best player, Victor Osimhen, is optimistic the Super Eagles can win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles won it in 2013, and since then, they have endured disappointment after disappointment despite having one of the best squads on the continent.

The Napoli striker missed the 2021 AFCON through injury and Covid-19. Nigeria reached the Round of 16 but were knocked out by Tunisia.

Osimhen and company want to bring joy to millions of Nigerians after years of agony. Their failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup magnified their problems in the last few years.

The Serie A Golden Boot winner says the Super Eagles mean business.

“We want to win every match, every trophy available, to make Nigerians proud of us again. Our coaches have some new ideas to help us get there, and if we work together as a team, anything is possible,” he told Al Jazeera.

He wants AFCON not only for his nation but for himself to emulate the country's greats.

“I want to win the AFCON with my country and write my own legacy. All the greats in Nigeria have a title to their name and to be mentioned in that space I must win it, too.”

Osimhen became the first Nigerian to win the APOY since 1999, and expectations are high ahead of the tournament.

Osimhen backed to win AFCON MVP

Sports Brief also previously reported that former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has tipped Victor Osimhen to win the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament award.

The 24-year-old Napoli forward is expected to play a critical role for the Super Eagles as coach Jose Peseiro’s team aims to secure Africa’s biggest football trophy for the first time since 2013.

Osimhen is the top striker remaining in Nigeria's squad, with Sadiq Umar and Victor Boniface injured.

Osimhen launches scathing attack on agent

Sports Brief earlier reported on Osimhen responding to the agent of his Napoli teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Kvaratskhelia's agent aimed a jibe at Osimhen, appearing to accuse the striker of a 'lack of ambition' a comment that infuriated him.

He took to social media to send an expletive-filled response amid the 2023 AFCON.
