  • Mahmoud Trezeguet says the Pharaohs have set the highest ambition

Egypt have not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 2010. The Pharaohs star, Mahmoud Trezeguet has said they only have one goal in Ivory Coast.

Trezeguet and Egypt have come close twice in the last few years. In 2017, they lost to Cameroon and in 2021, they painfully lost to Senegakl on penalties.

The Pharaohs are ranked fifth in the latest FIFA rankings behind Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. They are one of the favourites alongside some of those aforementioned countries.

Mohamed Salah is Egypt's best player and arguably Africa's greatest player. Rui Vitoria's side will depend on the Liverpool forward to deliver the goals and assists.

Egypt will take on four-time winners Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique in Group B.

Trezeguet on Egypt ambition at AFCON

The former Aston Villa star is set to play in his fourth AFCON tournament. The 2017 and 2021 memories are still fresh, but they have big goals.

"It is really difficult to lose two finals. It is painful but we will try again to get the title. We must have what we deserve, and we hope that this time luck will be on our side and that God will help us," Trezeguet said via CAF.

He is also wary of other top teams in the continental competition and admitted the Pharaohs were facing a difficult group to progress from.

"It is not easy. All the African teams are strong and have very good players. We will play all the matches as finals and see what they look like We came here aiming for a new title. Since our arrival, the entire team has only one goal, to go be crowned champions."

Trezeguet has played 66 times for Egypt and scored 15 goals.

The Marseille midfielder said the Pharaohs always score one goal and then waste time by staying on the ground when fouled.

"You can dominate, but they can score the 1-0 goal from a set-piece and then one player falls to the right, another to the left…"
