  • Dosu Joseph has some advice for Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho
  • The former Nigerian goalie has urged Uzoho to minimize his mistakes
  • Uzoho is expected to be Nigeria’s first-choice shot-stopper at AFCON

Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph, has backed struggling Francis Uzoho to turn his fortunes around with the Super Eagles after facing backlash from fans for his recent performances.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper is undisputedly Nigeria’s number-one choice heading into the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as Jose Peseiro maintains his trust in the Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper.

Speaking exclusively to Sports Brief, Dosu advised Uzoho to bring joy to Nigerians at the AFCON and recommended that he minimize errors while representing the national team.

“All we need to do is pray and hope that Uzoho will raise his game and let Nigerians know that he made mistakes, and it is part of life but not often, but this time, he needs to make fewer mistakes and make Nigerians happy.”

Uzoho saw Nigeria through a successful Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, where the Super Eagles lost just once – at home to Guinea-Bissau as they finished with 15 points from a possible 18.

History of strong Nigerian goalkeepers

Meanwhile, Nigeria have had some great goalkeepers in the past with the likes of Peter Rufai and more recently, Vincent Enyeama, the shot-stoppers who have won the hearts of their countrymen, DW Sports reports.

Enyeama made the team invincible when they won their previous title in Johannesburg 11 years ago, and his resignation from the national team in 2015 left large gaps for his successors to fill.

Uzoho became Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he appeared for the Super Eagles in three group games. The then-19-year-old prodigy, who was a member of the U-17 World Cup winning team in 2013, was projected to become one of Africa's next great goalkeepers but has yet to live up to that expectation.

Agu backs Uzoho for AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, has encouraged his countrymen to remain calm and support troubled goalkeeper, Uzoho.

Uzoho has faced criticism for a number of mistakes, including a major error in Nigeria's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Ghana, which denied the team a spot in Qatar.
