  • Percy Tau has aired his views on Lyle Foster and Lebo Mothiba missing out on the AFCON
  • The Bafana Bafana stars didn't make the cut for the competition due for varying reasons
  • The Al-Ahly midfielder also disclosed how he would help his younger teammates improve

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star, Percy Tau has shared his thoughts on the absence of Lyle Foster and Lebo Mothiba from South Africa's squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana will begin the tournament with a mouthwatering clash against the Eagles of Mali before facing Namibia and Tunisia in their final group-stage clashes.

SA's coach, Hugo Broos left the duo out for varying reasons: Foster has been struggling with his mental health, while Mothiba was injured while in action for RCS Strasbourg.

In a recent interview, Tau called it sad that both players could not make it to the tournament but believes the 23-man squad named by Broos is capable of doing the job in Ivory Coast, according to a report by iDiskiTimes.

"Sadly, we do not have them, but also there was a decision of the manager, some other circumstances that came up too; but we are confident in the group we have," he said.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion star also offered to help form a good partnership with his younger teammates to benefit the team overall.

"I am one of the old guys here, and I will try and see in training how I can form partnerships with the guys. Like I said, the responsibility is not on me alone; the other guys have to play [a part], and I will put in a good shift to help the team. I am confident the guys will help me."

Broos gives update on Mvala’s injury

Sports Brief also previously reported that Hugo Broos gave an update on Mothobi Mvala ahead of Bafana Bafana's first game at the 2023 AFCON.

On Tuesday, before the friendly against Lesotho, the former Cameroon national team coach admitted he wasn't sure about the defender's availability.

Mvala was reportedly diagnosed with a groin injury, which automatically ruled him out of Bafana Bafana's goalless draw prior to the start of AFCON.
