- Ex-Super Eagles star compares Ahmed Musa’s situation to Cristiano Ronaldo
Super Eagles winger Ahmed Musa will captain Nigeria's national team in the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ivory Coast.
Jose Peseiro came under severe criticism from fans for including the former Leicester City forward in his final 25-man squad for the competition.
The former CSKA Moscow winger will appear in his fourth AFCON tournament after featuring in the 2013, 2019, and 2021 editions.
AFCON 2013 winner Brown Ideye, during an interview with 54footballx, has compared the situation of Musa in the Nigerian national team to Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portuguese national team.
Ideye claimed that the former Real Madrid star is still the captain of the Selecao despite his age, but there is a complaint about Musa's inclusion in the AFCON squad.
"We push out our players early; Ronaldo is still playing for Portugal; why should Ahmed Musa be left out of this AFCON?" he said.
"Musa and Omeruo are the oldest players in the team and only the two players from the last squad that won the AFCON; these are leaders we need in the team. The younger players must be respectful to follow their leadership."
The former Dynamo Kyiv striker also disclosed how the experience of Joseph Yobo and Vincent Enyeama was vital to Nigeria's success in AFCON 2013.
"Joseph Yobo played a huge role in 2013, and Vincent Enyeama as well. Every night after training, we must gather in Vincent's room with Yobo leading the meeting," he added.
"We always fight ourselves and discuss how we can improve on the team and help each other. We made sacrifices in 2013, and the leadership of the experienced players was key."
