Bayer Leverkusen, the German Bundesliga table toppers, have revealed that Victor Boniface sustained a serious injury during the Super Eagles' training camp in Abu Dhabi.
The 23-year-old was expected to lead Nigeria’s attack alongside Victor Osimhen at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but had to be dropped from the squad after sustaining a muscle-tendon injury.
According to All Nigeria Soccer, OGC Nice forward Terem Moffi has been called in as a replacement for Boniface as Bayer Leverkusen released a statement confirming the seriousness of his injury.
The Bundesliga giants disclosed that the 23-year-old forward is expected to undergo surgery, which will rule him out of action for at least three months, with his expected return date in April.
Boniface has been nominated for the German Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for December after winning the award from August to November since he moved to Leverkusen in the summer of 2023.
Games Boniface is expected to miss
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen could see their Bundesliga title charge derail following the setback of Boniface’s injury as the Nigerian forward is set to miss almost three months of active football.
According to Soccernet, the 23-year-old forward who has emerged as Leverkusen’s top scorer this season looks set to miss as much as 15 games for Xabi Alonso’s team while out of action.
Among the games Boniface is expected to miss while out injured include matches against RB Leipzig on January 20, Bayern Munich on February 10 and Borussia Dortmund on April 19.
