FootballBenson Omala: Gor Mahia Head Coach Johnathan McKinstry Speaks on USM Alger Transfer Rumours
- Benson Omala has become the headline name of the Kenyan transfer window
- A top-tier Algerian side is reportedly scouting the Gor Mahia striker
- Coach Johnathan McKinstry said the club has not been approached
Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has said the club has not been approached for Benson Omala.
The highly-rated striker is currently linked with a move to Algerian top-tier team USM Alger.
McKinstry clarified that the club had not received any formal approach regarding the player's transfer, casting doubt on the rife transfer speculations.
Football journalist Micky Junior reported on X, formerly Twitter that the K’Ogalo striker could be heading to North Africa.
The journalist claimed on his Twitter handle that the figures involved included a monthly salary of $20,000 (Ksh3.1 million), a $100,000 (Ksh15.8 million) signing bonus and a $50,000 (Ksh7.9 million) transfer fee.
McKinstry stressed that no club has officially contacted them about Omala, challenging the credibility of the circulating transfer rumours.
“When a team is interested in our player, they normally contact the club through the officials who normally then ask for my opinion. No contact has been made with Omalla up to this point and we have not received any offer so far,” he is quoted on SportPesa News.
This isn't the first time the player has been linked with a potential move away from the perennial champions.
Omalla's stellar 22/23 season saw him score 26 goals as Gor secured their 20th title. He is also the current top scorer in the 2023/24 Football Kenya Federation Premier League with nine goals in 17 matches
USM Alger won the CAF Confederation Cup winners in the 2022/23 season. Despite their continental success, the Algerian club face challenges in the league, placing 13th in the 16-team competition with 11 points from nine matches.
