The countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast persists, and the stages are shaping up for what promises to be a captivating football spectacle.

Looking forward to the showcase in Ivory Coast, Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi has shared insights into his plans and aspirations in the event of winning the AFCON trophy.

Iwobi on the AFCON title

The versatile midfielder, who sat alongside his Fulham and Nigerian teammate Calvin Bassey in an interview with the Premier League club’s official website, opened up on what he would do if he won the AFCON.

Iwobi expressed his desire to use the championship as a means of boasting, particularly to his uncle Jay Jay Okocha, who has previously secured the AFCON title.

Acknowledging his uncle's achievements, Iwobi mentioned,

"I know my uncle has won it, and I'd like to have one to my name as well. Obviously, we have the quality to do so, and hopefully, we can do that, and I want to brag to him as well."

Further emphasising Okocha's impact, the 27-year-old midfielder shared memories of watching Okocha's games at Bolton and observing his entertaining and expressive style of play.

“When he was in Bolton, I used to go and watch some of his games and watched him train a couple of times at the training ground. He enjoyed football and always liked showing off to express himself, almost like an entertainer. He tells me to play football with a smile on my face, so that’s what I’m doing, and it has stuck by me.”

Iwobi will be raring to secure the much-needed head start with the Super Eagles when they kick off their AFCON campaign against Equatorial Guinea.

Super Eagles snubbed as AFCON favourite

Sports Brief in a previous report stated Ivory Coast Football Federation chief Yacine Diallo has snubbed Nigeria’s Super Eagles whilst naming his favourite teams to win the AFCON.

The 63-year-old recently addressed various topics in the media, discussing his nation's preparation for the tournament. Instead of choosing the West African nation, he opted for defending champions Senegal, along with two North African nations, Egypt and Morocco.
