- Victor Osimhen has opened up on his country’s chance of winning the AFCON
The countdown to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) continues in full swing, and a host of teams boasting elite players are eager to make their mark at the football festival in Ivory Coast.
Several nations, including Nigeria's Super Eagles, are widely seen as strong contenders to clinch the championship. The West African nation is particularly favoured, primarily owing to the impressive array of attacking talent under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro.
Nevertheless, as the football showcase approaches, star striker and the 2023 African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, has shared his thoughts on Nigeria's prospects of securing the trophy in Ivory Coast.
Osimhen on Nigeria winning the AFCON
The Napoli star, who spoke in an interview as reported by Brila.net, appeared optimistic when faced with the question of Nigeria winning the AFCON.
“The most important thing for us now is to go to Ivory Coast and win the tournament.”
“I believe in this group. We have a bunch of talented players to execute the job. Fingers crossed, we are going to do so well.”
The words of Osimhen stir confidence in the minds of many Nigerians who are sceptical about the 25-man list assembled by gaffer Peseiro.
The lethal number nine, who found the back of the net 10 times during the qualification series of the competition per data courtesy of Whoscored, will surely be aiming to continue his stellar form in front of goal when they kick off the competition campaign against Equatorial Guinea.

FootballSports Brief in a previous report highlighted that Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has earned himself another Serie A recognition following his stellar performance with Napoli.
The 25-year-old spearheaded the Neopolitans' charge to win their first Scudetto in 33 years and was named the league’s top scorer with 26 goals.
The lethal showing by Osimhen translated to his nomination and seemingly winning a flurry of awards, including the best forward of the Italian league, Italian Serie A Footballer of the Year and more recently, the African Footballer of the Year award.
