With just a few days remaining until the commencement of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, hosted by Ivory Coast (AFCON), anticipation is building.

The West African country is set to welcome the entire African continent for the second time in history, marking the first occasion since its previous hosting in 1984.

Ahead of the tournament kickoff, Sports Brief takes a closer look at the top 10 highest-paid coaches participating in the 2023 AFCON, as reported by African journalist Micky Junior.

Highest-paid African coaches

1. Djamel Belmadi - €208,000 per month

Assuming the managerial role of the Algerian national team on August 2, 2018, 46-year-old Belmadi quickly made his mark. Steering Algeria to victory, he secured his first international trophy for the country during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

His team's flawless journey to the final included notable wins over Senegal in both the group stage and the ultimate showdown.

At the upcoming AFCON, Belmadi stands as the highest-paid coach, boasting a monthly salary estimated at €208,000.

2. Rui Victoria - €200,000 per month

Taking the helm of the Egyptian national team on July 12, 2022, 53-year-old Rui Vitoria, who had previously managed Benfica, Al Nassr, and Spartak Moscow, inked a four-year contract.

As per the terms of his agreement with Egypt, Vitoria commands an impressive monthly salary of €200,000.

3. Jean Louis Gasset – €108,000 per month

At 70 years old, this French ex-midfielder now serves as the current manager of the Ivory Coast national team. The coach from Ivory Coast commands an impressive monthly salary of €108,000.

4. Jose Peseiro – €70,000 per month

Jose Peseiro is entrusted with guiding the Super Eagles to their fourth continental crown. On May 15, 2022, Peseiro assumed the role of the head coach for the Nigerian Men's Football Team, per ESPN.

The 63-year-old Portuguese international has an extensive coaching background, having managed various clubs in his home country, such as Sporting CP and FC Porto. Additionally, he served as the head coach of the Saudi Arabia national team.

For his role with the Nigerian team, Peseiro receives a monthly salary of €70,000.

5. Walid Regragui - €60,000 per month

After guiding Morocco to the knockout stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, marking their first appearance since 1986, and achieving further success by reaching the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory over Spain in the round of 16, Walid is set to lead the Moroccan National Team in the 2023 AFCON.

His noteworthy achievements position him as the fifth-highest-paid coach for the upcoming tournament.

6. Hugo Broos – €50,000 per month

Having assumed the position of Head Coach for the Bafana Bafana of South Africa on May 5, 2021, Hugo Broos is gearing up to participate in the AFCON tournament for the second time in his career.

His prior experience includes leading the Cameroon National Team to victory in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

7. Aliou Cissé – €46,000 per month

At the age of 47, Aliou Cisse is set to undertake the challenge of defending the AFCON trophy in 2023.

His previous success includes leading Senegal to victory at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured their first title by defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the final.

8. Chris Hughton - €46,000 per month

Chris Hughton, the Head Coach of the Black Stars, ranks as the 8th highest-paid coach at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament.

The 65-year-old assumed the position as head coach of the Ghana national team on February 12, 2023, and is poised to guide the team in his inaugural AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.

9. Rigobert Song – €29,000 per month

Rigobert Song, the Head Coach of Cameroon, holds the 9th position among the highest-paid coaches at the 2023 African Cup of Nations tournament.

Following their hosting of the previous edition, where they reached the semi-finals on home soil, Song aims to surpass the semi-final stage in Ivory Coast.

10. Jalel Kadri - €11,000 per month

At 52 years old, Jalel Kadri holds the 10th position among the highest-paid coaches in the lineup for the 2023 African Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast. His tenure as Tunisia's head coach began on January 23, 2022.

Algerian legend names AFCON contenders

Sports Brief also previously reported on Algerian football legend, Rabah Madjer, naming possible AFCON 2023 winners.

The Algerian said it is difficult to pick just one team considering there are several teams that could go all the way to lifting the trophy.

Madjer is one of Africa's greatest players. He won the 1990 AFCON with Algeria as well as the 1987 European Cup with Porto.
