FootballMason Greenwood: What Man United Loanee Told Referee As Red Card Decision Gets Rescinded
- Mason Greenwood's red card against Rayo Vallecano was overturned by the FA
- The Getafe striker was thought to have insulted the referee
- A review of the footage has revealed what the 22-year-old said
Mason Greenwood was handed a reprieve after La Liga overturned a direct red card he had picked up against Rayo Vallecano on January 2.
The Manchester United loanee was given his marching orders in the 50th minute by the centre referee, Jorge Figueroa Vasquez.
It was a torrid evening for Getafe, who finished the game with nine men after Juanmi Latasa was sent off in the first half for two bookable offences.
Greenwood then picked up his red card before Dennis Suarez was given another one after leaving the field of play. Jose Bordalas' side lost the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from Sergio Camello.
There was confusion over what Greenwood had said to the referee, given that the red card was for dissent. The official had indicated in his match report that the teenage striker had used an expletive to insult him.
What Greenwood said to the referee
In a statement, the Spanish FA revealed that after reviewing footage from the incident, they were satisfied that the striker did not insult the official.
"The repeated viewing of the images has allowed this committee to conclude, beyond any doubt, that the action that led to the expulsion did not occur as described by the referee and, ultimately, prove the material error manifest in the referee's report. These images demonstrate that the player actually said, 'One, two, three, four [fouls], (expletive)," as quoted by Sport Bible.
The red card was overturned with the 22-year-old starting in their Copa Del Rey match against Espanyol on Saturday. A late Luis Milla goal helped Getafe ease through to the next round.
Greenwood has three goals and four assists in the Spanish top division, with Getafe currently in eighth place with 26 points.
