Erik ten Hag sets unwanted record with Manchester United after defeat to West Ham
FootballSupercomputer Predicts Manchester United’s Chances of Finishing in Top 4
- Manchester United’s struggles have seeped into the new season
- The Red Devils have already lost nine league games and sit in eighth place with 31 points
- A supercomputer has attempted to predict where the Red Devils will end the season
Manchester United fans look away.
A supercomputer recently tried to predict where the Red Devils would end the season based on their performance after 20 games.
Things are looking grim for United, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on December 30, their ninth league loss of the season.
Erik ten Hag’s side now sits in 8th place on the log with 31 points, 14 behind runaway leaders Liverpool.
While it is safe to conclude the title is well beyond United’s reach, focus for the 13-time Premier League champions will undoubtedly shift to qualifying for the Champions League.
But according to an Opta analyst, that might end up being a tall order for United, if they keep playing with the inconsistency they have shown.
The supercomputer rated several Premier League clubs’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League. Aston Villa have been given a higher chance of making the top four.
This makes sense, as Unai Emery’s side is surprisingly challenging Liverpool for the title as they sit three points behind the Anfield club.
Angelos "Ange" Postecoglou’s Tottenham has been given a 13.3% chance of making the top four. In contrast, the other strong contenders, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Villa, have been given a 99%, 94.3%, 97.4% and 78.9%, respectively.
Brighton and Hove Albion, who are level on points with Manchester United, have been given a higher chance of finishing inside the top four than the Red Devils as they have a 3% chance, according to the simulation.

Ten Hag on Man United's problems
Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Erik ten Hag’s take on Manchester United’s critical problem after their latest defeat.
United ended 2023 with a new low as they suffered 14 losses across all competitions on Saturday, December 30.
It was Nottingham Forest’s first Premier League win against Manchester United in 29 years. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side scored a late goal when it looked like the visitors had salvaged a draw.
After the game, Ten Hag was adamant his team was doing their best with what they had at the moment amid an injury crisis.
