  • Itumeleng Khune made a fine save in the opening minute to deny Antonio van Wyk
  • Stellenbosch FC faltered as an already-on-holiday Sage Stephens let in an early howler
  • The young Carling Knockout All-Star team gave the cup winners the run around in the end

The release of competitive constraints made for an exciting exhibition.

Stellenbosch FC missed out on Carling Knockout riches as they were outfoxed by an exuberant Carling Knockout All-Star team.

Players were guaranteed a share of R1 million just for showing up, with the winners double that from the sponsors.

Captained by legend Itumeleng Khune, the youth openly expressed themselves against a Stellenbosch team that dominated the first half but ultimately ran out of gas.

Antonio van Wyk could have set a very different tone as he danced around the All-Stars defence from the kickoff. After a neat one-two, Van Wyk had only Khune to beat but the veteran's outstretched arm deflected the shot onto the post.

A new star was born as Mfundo Vilakazi whipped in a free kick that skidded past Sage Stephens. It was a fluke moment for the 17-year-old but his overall performance was far more impressive.

Even for a charity match, the penalty given to Ashley du Preez shortly after was fortunate. The Kaizer Chiefs man cooly sent his former Stellenbosch teammate the wrong way.

Athenkosi Mcaba received a red card for a flying knee-high lunge on Orlando Pirates' DStv Diski captain.

With 25 minutes to go, Steve Barker rang the changes but there was just not enough sharpness from a team who had given their all throughout 2023.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the return of Itumeleng Khune. Mervin Boji spoiled Khune's clean sheet in injury time but fans got what they came for, with the suspended legend winning Man of the Match.
