Mozambican defender Edmilson Dove has lamented about the low numbers of Kaizer Chiefs players at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The 29-year-old defender was named in the final 27-man squad representing Mozambique at the 34th edition of the AFCON.
The last time the Mambas featured in the competition was in 2010, and they failed to make it out of the group stage.
In a recent interview, according to iDiskiTimes, Dove claimed he wished the AmaKhosi had more players in AFCON but admitted that their slow start to the season could have been the cause.
"We did not start the season as well as we would have wished," he said.
"But we have been steadily picking up the pieces and ended the year on a high, so now we want to go into 2024 with the same momentum. I would have liked to see some of my club teammates called into the national team."
Dove is the only Kaizer Chiefs player going to AFCON, with South Africa national team boss Hugo Broos opting against including a player from the club in his 23-man squad.
"But at the end of the day, the coach is the right guy to decide who he wants to pick. I wish Bafana Bafana well [in AFCON] and hope they do their country proud."
Toure includes South Africa in AFCON favourites
