Inaki Williams has left Spain to team up with his Ghanaian teammates but has still looked back to celebrate Athletic Bilbao’s 2-0 win over Europa League winners, Sevilla.

Williams represents Ghana after switching allegiance in 2022 despite having one appearance for the European country, while his brother, Nico, opted to play for Spain.

He was named in the Black Stars’ 27-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, to be held in Ivory Coast between January 13 and February 11 this year.

Williams celebrates Bilbao’s victory

Bilbao beat a struggling Sevilla 2-0 at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Stadium to move into the top four in the La Liga table, level on points with Atletico Madrid and three behind Barcelona in third.

Goals from Mikel Vesga and Aitor Paredes helped former Barcelona coach, Ernesto Valverde’s men secure vital points against the relegation-threatened champions of Europe's second tier.

Inaki was on a flight back home while the La Liga game was ongoing, and he was quick to react on social media to his team’s victory upon landing in Ghana for their AFCON preparations.

Speaking to the club’s official website before his departure, the 29-year-old confirmed talks between the club and country to allow him to play against Sevilla, but it was impossible.

"It’s a decision that's not up to me. I would like to stay here until the last possible moment and help my teammates against Sevilla, but nothing is certain yet," he said.
"I want to help both sides. The club and the Ghana Football Association are in contact and have a good understanding. I owe everything to Athletic and hope to be able to help, but I still have to wait a couple more days to know the final decision."

The forward has been mostly available for the club. He played a club record of 251 consecutive matches between April 20, 2016, and January 29, 2023.
