Stellenbosch FC manager Steve Barker has explained why Hugo Broos' Bafana Bafana squad will do well at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Broos named a 23-man squad to represent South Africa at the competition, with the Premier Soccer League's defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns having the most players.
South Africa are grouped alongside Tunisia, Mali and Namibia.
In an interview ahead of the Stellenbosch FC game against the Carling PSL All-Star XI, Barker believes having more Sundowns players in the squad would help the team do well in the competition, according to a report by iDiskiTimes.
"I think with having so many Mamelodi Sundowns players in the team and them doing so well on the continent, it is the way I anticipate they will be going, so I have a feeling we can do well in this AFCON, the later stage of the tournament," he said.
Broos is an experienced coach in the competition and led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to the title in 2017 and has been backed by Barker concerning his decision to opt for a 23-man squad instead of 27.
"We have to support the Bafana team, at the end of the day the coach makes decisions, I think it is a really good team, especially our starting XI, it is a competitive team," he added.
