FootballCameroon's Backup Goalkeeping Options with Onana's Late Arrival
- Andre Onana will be available for Manchester United’s game against Tottenham
- United face the north Londoners on January 14, a day before Cameroon play Guinea
- The Indomitable Lions have three other goalkeepers in their 27-man squad
An in-depth look at the Cameroon squad suggests Rigobert Song’s team direly needs Andre Onana’s service in goal.
The Indomitable Lions have taken a major risk after allowing Onana to leave club duty late, allowing their star goalkeeper to feature for Manchester United against Tottenham on January 14.
United’s clash with the north Londoners will take place on the eve of Cameroon’s first game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, a crunch clash against Guinea on January 15.
The Red Devils wanted Onana to be made available for the Tottenham game, and according to Manchester Evening News, a common ground has been worked out.
Onana, who has played every minute of Manchester United’s games this season, will also be available for the FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic on January 8.
Cameroon’s other goalkeeping options
While Onana will eventually join his country if everything goes according to plan, it's not like Song is devoid of options should he need to deploy them.
According to Bein Sports, The Indomitable Lions’ 27-man squad comprises Onana and three other goalkeepers: Fabrice Ondoa, Devis Epassy and Simon Ngapandouetnbu.
Sports Brief looks at all three goalkeepers and how they faired for their clubs.
Simon Ngapandouetnbu
The 20-year-old goalkeeper plays for Marseille in France but is yet to make a single appearance for the club, making him a massive gamble for Cameroon between the sticks.
Fabrice Ondoa
Fabrice Ondoa also plies his trade in France, as he plays for Nimes.
Being 28, he is the same age as Onana and is pretty experienced, but he has made just two appearances for the French third-tier side, conceding five goals and keeping no clean sheets, according to Transfermarkt.

FootballDevis Epassy
Epassy is the oldest and arguably the most experienced of the trio and plies his trade in Saudi Arabia for FC Abha.
However, he has not made a single appearance for his club since August. He only has one appearance this season where he conceded three goals. With all this in mind, his form is bound to come under scrutiny.

Cameroon named among AFCON favourites
Sports Brief also reported on the favourites to win the AFCON, according to the Algeria coach.
In what was a clear attempt to take pressure off his team, Djamel Belmadi instead named five other teams which he claims are in a better position to take the crown.
According to the Algeria coach, hosts Cote d’Ivoire are the team to beat going into the tournament.
