  • Vincent Enyeama has reacted to claims that he would train Nigeria's goalkeepers for AFCON
  • He recently posted on social media, leading to reports that he would assist with the coaching
  • The former Super Eagles keeper will be present at the Nigerian national team's training camp

Former Nigerian international, Vincent Enyeama has reacted to reports that he will train the Super Eagles goalkeepers before and during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

He is regarded as Nigeria’s most successful goalkeeper after playing in five Nations Cups - 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2013 - and was also part of the Nigeria squad at the 2002, 2010, and 2014 World Cup tournaments.

The retired goalkeeper had made a cryptic post on his social media account about being in the camp of his country's national team for the forthcoming continental showpiece.

On New Year's Eve, Enyeama sparked mixed reactions by writing:

"Let’s go, see you in camp. Time for business."

The post triggered excitement from some fans who suggested the former goalie would be at the Nigerian team's camp in Abu Dhabi before the tournament.

However, the former Lille of France shot-stopper later has now clarified that his visit to the training camp would be for personal reasons only, and he had not been mandated by the Nigeria Football Federation.

He said, via Punch:

"I haven’t been given any appointment by the NFF, neither was there any such discussion. That was only a personal comment, meaning I will visit them in camp when I attend the AFCON. Any opportunity to encourage the lads, I use it."

Nigeria will begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title as they make final preparations in Abu Dhabi before hitting Ivory Coast on January 9.

They are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.

Enyeama recounts special moment with Messi

Sports Brief previously reported that Vincent Enyeama recounted the special moment he shared with Lionel Messi when Nigeria faced Argentina at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The former Lille shot-stopper has faced the mercurial Argentine twice at World Cup tournaments, the first time being the 2010 edition in South Africa and then again four years later.

Enyeama, a legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, was able to stop the former Barcelona star from scoring in the 2010 Mundial but could not prevent him in their 2014 meeting.
