  • The Catalan club are now level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the table
  • Fans now believe Michel’s side can pull the impossible and win the league

Football fans all said the same thing about Girona after the Spanish club dramatically beat Atletico Madrid in a thriller on Wednesday, January 3.

Ivan Martin scored a stoppage-time winner for his side just when it looked like the game would end in a stalemate.

The win was crucial for Girona coach Michel, as his team moved level on points with Real Madrid, who beat Mallorca in the other game played on Wednesday.

Los Blancos are top of the table only on goal difference with half the campaign gone, and fans are now starting to believe that Girona, who are typically relegation candidates at the start of the season, could pull a miracle.

How the game went

In all fairness, this could easily be dubbed the game of the season in La Liga, and we’re only three days into the new year.

According to ESPN, Girona went into the lead two minutes into the contest as Valery Fernandez curled in a great effort from the edge of the box, but Alvaro Morata equalized in the 14th minute.

The home side’s high pressing paid off as they went ahead again in the 26th minute through Savio after Atletico’s Koke had his pockets picked.

Former Manchester United man Daley Blind then extended the hosts’ lead with a tap-in, but Morata reduced the deficit before halftime in a frantic first half with five goals.

Morata sealed his hat trick by drawing his side level in the 53rd minute, and that is how the scores stayed for a large part of the second half before late drama from Ivan Martin, whose goal stole the win for Girona.

Fan reactions

On social media, fans were more than entertained by the game, and they all concluded that it was time to start believing in Girona.

At the start of the season, it looked like Girona, popularly known in Catalonia as ‘Albirrojos’, were experiencing an early season floury.

But 19 games in and Michel Munoz’s side is only behind Real Madrid on goal difference, according to BBC, and are the only genuine side challenging Los Blancos for the title.

Here are some reactions from fans on social media:

"Girona's historic achievements this season are truly remarkable first ever wins against Barcelona and Atlético Madrid A season to remember for the club."

"They are going to pull a Leicester."

@MrOdanz said:

"This Girona team is not here to joke. They're a really solid team and ruthless in attack. La Liga's version of Leicester"

@noblekidKe joked:

"Girona and Bayer Leverkusen doing that Leicester 2015 thing while all Arsenal can do is bottling."

Mourinho blamed for Arsenal’s dip in form

Sports Brief also reported how fans linked Jose Mourinho to Arsenal’s dip in form.

Mikel Arteta’s side has picked up just one point from their last three league games, a run threatening to end their title ambitions.

Following their 1-1 draw against Liverpool, Arsenal succumbed to shock back-to-back defeats against West Ham and Fulham, teams that both hail from London.
