FootballGianluigi Buffon Wants FIFA to Increase Size of Goalposts, Fans Troll Andre Onana Over Comments
- Gianluigi Buffon has proposed a change to the measurements of the goalpost
- The legendary Italian goalkeeper also explained why he felt this was needed
- Buffon's suggestion stirred up trolling of United keeper Andre Onana by fans
Football fans have trolled Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, after former Juventus shot-stopper, Gianluigi Buffon proposed that FIFA increase the size of the goalpost.
The 2006 World Cup winner believes the current goalpost measurement, which has existed since 1875, makes it harder to score goals given the nature of the modern game.
In an interview with Tuttosport, as per Tribuna, Buffon suggested that the dimension of the goal should be increased to compensate for the quicker pace in football of today.
"We could start thinking about it. The size of the goalposts was determined in 1875. They were probably too big for the anthropometric values of that time. It was probably right back then, but now, seeing some athletes and goalkeepers, one might think," the Italian legend remarked.
While Buffon ceded it was not up to him to make this decision, he explained the reason for his suggestion and believed those in charge should be asking questions.
"Goalkeepers have become bigger, that's true. But outfield players have also become faster, [more] unpredictable, and they hit harder. You can see the effect of the goalkeeper's height on long shots.
"30 years ago, you would score 10 goals for every 50 shots. Today, it's three. From afar, it's much more difficult to score with a two-metre goalkeeper," Buffon added.
Fans troll Onana over Buffon's remarks
The keeping legend's suggestion stirred reactions from fans on social media, with most of them using his remarks as an excuse to troll Onana, who has been struggling in the Man United goal since joining his summer transfer from Inter Milan.
