  • DStv has confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations won't be broadcast on SuperSport
  • The Africa's biggest football tournament is scheduled for January 13 - February 11
  • Nigerians have reacted on social media concerning the coverage of the competition

Nigerians have reacted to the news about SuperSport not broadcasting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast due to their inability to secure rights.

CAF is the only body responsible for approving rights for the coverage of the AFCON, but Africa's most prominent sports broadcaster won't be airing the biggest football tournament on the continent.

The tournament will begin with a game between the host nation and Guinea-Bissau on Saturday, January 13.

Multichoice released an official statement on their social media pages to confirm that SuperSport channels will not broadcast the competition, according to a report by BrownGh.

"SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th - February 11th 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament," Multichoice stated.
"However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels."

The news about the tournament's coverage stirred reactions from Nigerians on social media.

"With all the outrageous hike in subscription prices, you still won't stream AFCON"

@folashow_ said:

"We’re able to watch all other competitions, but when it’s time for Afcon they are not able to secure the rights. Nice one."

@Owusuivy said:

"Is this some joke? Multichoice is an African brand, and they can't secure the right to broadcast African tournament? Are they fr, lmao."

@EhichoyaOdigie said:

"The biggest continental tournament in Africa will not be televised on DSTV? That means most Africans and Nigerians won’t be able to watch it. My question is, why don’t we have serious rivals in Nigeria? Why are we dependent on DSTV always?"

AFCON teams name final squads for competition

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that participating teams at the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations are making final preparations ahead of the tournament, which starts on January 13.

Coaches have submitted their final squads for the showpiece and have chosen the players who will be heading to the tournament to represent their respective countries.

South Africa will be without key striker Lyle Foster, who was left out of the squad due to recent mental health struggles, while Ivory Coast will be without Wilfred Zaha.
