  • Cavin Johnson believes he has done enough to keep his interim job at Kaizer Chiefs
  • Chiefs have climbed the table with a winning record since Johnson took charge
  • Kaizer Motaung has said that a new coach won't take charge until next season

The league might be taking a break but Cavin Johnson will be hard at work.

The interim coach has taken the opportunity given to him by Kaizer Chiefs with both hands and does not want his hard work going to waste.

Johnson has helped the Amakhosi earn 13 points from a possible 21, dragging them to within five points of second-placed Cape Town City.

Kaizer Motaung has given Johnson his backing, saying that no new appointment will be made until the 2023/24 season, as reported by TimesLive.

This reassurance has solidified the interim coach's resolve and could see it as an extended audition for a permanent spot.

However, Johnson has not allowed himself to be the centre of attention, pointing out that the incremental improvements have come about thanks to everyone at the club pulling in the same direction.

The six-week AFCON break could ruin that momentum and the coach will be cognisant of not letting his implemented standards slide. TimesLive reported Johnson saying:

“I think this break will probably be one of the hardest I am going to work because we can’t end 2023 on a high like this and then start 2024 in a different mode."

The club have given the players some free time but will assemble in early January to continue their work. Chiefs' next game is on February 13 when they host TS Galaxy.

Khune to return after AFCON

Sports Brief recently reported on Itumeleng Khune having commenced his personal development programmes.

Kaizer Chiefs have set out an outline of the actions Khune needs to take before being welcomed back to training.

The club expects the programmes to be concluded by February setting Khune up for a return to the first team.
