  • Jurgen Klopp appeared to have lost confidence in Mo Salah's penalty-taking expertise
  • Salah missed from the spot against Newcastle but made amends in the second half
  • The 31-year-old will now link up with the Egyptian national team ahead of the upcoming AFCON

Jurgen Klopp appeared to have developed 'mistrust' for Mohammed Salah as he looked away from the latter's second penalty against Newcastle United.

Salah, who has been Liverpool's first-choice penalty taker, has struggled to convert from the spot recently, and it proved a similar case on New Year's Day as the Reds took on the Magpies at Anfield.

The Egyptian King saw his effort from 12 yards thwarted by Martin Dubravka in the 22nd minute, as he wasted a fine opportunity to put his side in the lead after an utterly dominant performance.

This was Salah's fourth miss from the spot from his last 10 penalties for Liverpool, according to AnythingLFC.

He would, however, make amends when he was set up by Darwin Nunez for the game's opener in a devastating counter-attacking move after recess, marking his 150th Premier League goal for the Merseyside club, Givemesport reports.

The former Chelsea winger then turned provider as Liverpool notched their third of the evening before managing to exorcise his penalty ghosts at the tail-end of the game.

Klopp's curious reaction at Salah's second penalty

Substitute Diogo Jota appeared to have dived in minimal contact from Dubravka, which referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot after consultation with the VAR.

This time, he had a different result as his effort went one way, with the Newcastle goalie going the other way to put an exclamation mark on the win for Liverpool, who opened a three-point gap atop of the Premier League.

Interestingly, as Salah stood behind the ball, Klopp could not watch his star player as he turned away.

His action, which could suggest mistrust for the two-time African Footballer of the Year, proved magical as he swept the ball home.

Fans mock Salah after penalty miss

Prior to bagging his 150th and 151st goals for the Reds, Mo Salah had a chance to put his side in front against Newcastle United but saw his penalty saved by Martin Dubravka.

While the Liverpool fans may have cause for concern, it was rival fans who used the moment to mock the Egyptian, Sports Brief reported.

Social media went wild as football lovers mocked Salahā€™s failure and his hairline as well. Some even suggested that there was a Christmas curse on the Egyptian.
