  • The Super Eagles of Nigeria are currently plagued with a goalkeeping crisis
  • Former shot-stopper Vincent Enyeama is set to return to the National team fold

The countdown to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast is in full swing, and numerous teams are eager to vie for the prestigious title in what stands as the continent's premier football tournament.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are amongst the teams largely tipped to clinch the prize largely due to their attacking prowess posed by Jose Peseiro’s side.

However, the underlying defensive frailties posed by the three-time African Champions have raised scepticism about the team’s ability to win their highly coveted fourth title.

Nonetheless, amid the growing scepticism meted to the Nigerian team goalkeeping department, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper has hinted at a possible return to the National team.

Super Eagles goalkeeper set to National team return

According to reports from Soccernet.com, former Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama has hinted at a return with the national team ahead of the AFCON showdown.

Enyeama, who retired from the team in 2015 at 33, made over a hundred appearances for the national team. In a surprising turn of events, he expressed his interest in rejoining the team through a comment on the official Instagram account of the Super Eagles.

In response to a post about the AFCON preparations, Enyeama commented,

"Let’s go, See you in camp. Time for business."

The potential return of the 2013 AFCON winner could prove to be a significant boost for the Nigerian national team. His wealth of experience is expected to inspire confidence in Francis Uzoho, the current first-choice goalkeeper, as well as other goalkeepers present in the camp.

As the AFCON tournament is set to kick off on January 14, the Super Eagles are gearing up for training camp in the United Arab Emirates.

Super Eagles goalkeeper makes impressive debut

Sports Brief in a previous report highlighted that Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made an impressive debut in Udinese’s three-nil victory against highflying Bologna.

The 24-year-old was on had to hand Gabriele Cioffi’s side their first victory since November.

The former Watford shot-stopper was omitted from the final 25-man list released by coach Jose Peseiro.
