What a year 2023 was for football.
While Lionel Messi and Argentina dominated headlines at the beginning of the year, thanks to their World Cup win in December 2022, league football soon stole the headlines.
With Manchester City securing the treble and Barcelona winning the La Liga title in Xavi’s first season, there were plenty of talking points.
But we aren’t focusing on that. Instead, Sports Brief looks at some of the best goals scored during the calendar year. While the following list is not in a particular order, it showcases some of the best strikes in the world during 2023.
Erling Haaland vs Southampton
Where there are goals involved, there is Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian striker scored 44 goals in all competitions in 2023, including a stunning bicycle kick against Southhampton.
With City 3-0 up in the 68th minute, many would have forgiven them for taking their foot off the pedal.
But when Jack Grealish lobbed a lofted cross into the box for the unmarked Haaland, the Man City star pulled off a beautiful bicycle kick to make it 4-0 to the visitors.
Alejandro Garnacho vs Everton
Speaking of bicycle kicks, it didn’t get much better than Alejandro Garnacho’s effort against Everton.
With the scores level at 0-0, Garnacho produced a sublime overhead kick that only got better the more you watched it. The Argentinian’s effort even drew comparisons with a goal Wayne Rooney scored, also in a Manchester United shirt.
Garnacho’s goal inspired the side to a 3-0 win and will go down as one of the best bicycle kick goals.

FootballEddie Nketiah vs Sheffield United
What’s as good as a bicycle kick? A thunderbolt into the top corner.
Just ask Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, who achieved that against Sheffield United. The Englishman rifled home a shot into the top corner as The Gunners ran riot, winning 5-0.
Nketiah also scored his first hat trick for the club during the game, bringing up the achievement with that long-range effort.
Memphis Depay vs Granada
Known for having a powerful shot, Memphis is no stranger to scoring bangers.
The Dutch attacker has scored a few long-range efforts during his career, but his effort against Granada will live long in memory. Memphis came on as a substitute for Atletico Madrid during their La Liga game and took just eight minutes to get his name on the scoresheet.
His strike from 30 yards out also earned him the Goal of the Month award for August in La Liga.

FootballAleksandr Golovin vs Metz
While he’s not the biggest-name player on the list, Aleksandr Golovin has a fearsome reputation for scoring screamers.
The AS Monaco attacking midfielder has scored 14 goals from outside the box, with his longest long-range goal from open play coming against Metz.
The Russian rifled home a goal from 31 metres, which left the goalkeeper with no chance and inspired Monaco to a 2-1 win.
Jude Bellingham vs Barcelona
La Liga has been dominated by one name in 2023.
Jude Bellingham’s arrival in Spain turned the league on its head, and the Englishman quickly became the most talked about footballer in the country.
The former Borussia Dortmund star scored 17 goals in 21 games since joining the side, but it was his strike against Barcelona that got people talking.
The Englishman didn’t let the pressure of El Clasico get to him as he rifled home a long-range effort to level the game in the 68th minute. He added insult to injury, scoring the winner in the 92nd minute.

The goal was scored from 26.8 yards out and was a thing of beauty.
Cristiano Ronaldo vs Al Okhdood
No list of brilliant goals would be complete without Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar has scored some fantastic goals during his legendary career, and he continues to do so even at 38.
Now pitting his skills against defences in the Saudi Pro League, CR7 is showing that he hasn’t lost his touch as he finds a way to score worldies. The former Real Madrid produced one against Al Okhdood when he lobbed the goalkeeper to grab one of his two goals during the game.

FootballLamine Camara vs AS Monaco
If long-range goals are your thing, you’ll love Lamine Camara’s goal against AS Monaco.
The Senegalese youngster needed four minutes to get his name onto the scoresheet with a goal from his own half.
The 19-year-old won the ball in his own half before firing a shot towards the goal. The long-range effort flew over the keeper’s head and into the back of the net.
Camara’s effort wasn’t enough to give Metz the win, as they went on to win 2-1.
Harry Kane vs Darmstadt
Harry Kane has found a new lease on life in Germany.
The England captain has already scored 25 goals in 22 games for Bayern Munich, but it doesn’t get much better than his strike against Darmstadt.
Kane scored the fifth goal of Bayern’s eight and rounded off his hat trick in fine fashion. Much like Camara, Kane decided to take a shot from his own half and caught the keeper off guard.
