FootballPremier League: All the Managers that Have Been Sacked in 2023
- The Premier League remains one of the most daunting leagues to manage a club
- Several high-profile managers were sacked by Premier League teams
- Most of these managers were in charge of relegation-threatened clubs
Being a Premier League manager is surely one of the most daunting jobs in sport.
For one thing, job security is extremely slim, and the English top flight has proven that a manager is only as good as his last game.
It only takes a poor run of form combined with rival teams performing well to get a Premier League manager on the verge of a sack, and despite some of their best efforts, some coaches are simply not up for the league’s demands.
As the year 2023 comes to a close, Sports Brief now looks at all the Premier League managers that were sacked and where they are now.
1. Frank Lampard
The former Chelsea man was the first to get sacked in 2023 as he was dismissed by Everton in January, with The Toffees 19th in the league.
Lampard was replaced by Sean Dyche, who guided the club away from the relegation zone and is currently trying to dig the team out of a rut brought by a 10-point deduction. Lampard is yet to bounce back to management.
2. Jesse Marsch
Former Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was the next to go as he was dismissed with the club just above the drop zone on goal difference. He is also currently without a club.
3. Nathan Jones
A mid-season appointment, Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton just before the World Cup break.
But he could not save Southampton from relegation and was sacked just three months into his stint.

Vieira was dismissed by Crystal Palace after a torrid 11-game winless run and replaced by Roy Hodgson, who experienced more favourable fixtures for the remainder of the season.
5. Antonio Conte
Who can forget Antonio Conte’s interesting rant against Tottenham Hotspur?
In March, after Tottenham were eliminated from the Champions League and squandered a lead to draw against Southampton, Conte went on a tirade during a presser and was dismissed hours later.
6. Brendan Rodgers
Notice a pattern here? All three of the relegated sides from the 2022/23 campaign sacked their managers in an attempt to save their season.
Leicester City dismissed Brendan Rodgers after a run of one point from six matches.
The Foxes now have a new manager, Enzo Maresca, who is doing an incredible job as the team is well on course to get promoted back to the Premier League.

7. Graham Potter
The former Brighton manager barely lasted seven months at Chelsea, who dismissed him in April. But the Blues’ luck did not change, and they ended up winning just one match in their next 11 games. Potter is yet to bounce back to management.
8. Cristian Stellini
Stellini was tasked with the interim job of steadying the Tottenham ship.
But the North Londoners’ struggles continued, and after four points from four games, Stellini was also sacked and replaced by Ryan Mason.
9. Javi Garcia
This was another second managerial sacking from the same club. Javi Garcia was supposed to revive Leeds’ survival bid, but a run of one point from a possible 15 made the board panic, and he was also sacked.

10. Gary O’Neil
Gary O’Neil helped Bournemouth secure survival, but the Cherries decided to try a different tactician at the end of the season, hiring former Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola.
O’Neil has since bounced back and is currently the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
11. Julen Lopetegui
Gary O’Neil’s return to the Premier League came at the expense of another beloved manager, as Wolves had to do away with former Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui.
Lopetegui helped Wolves survive relegation last season but had disagreements with the club over transfer funds. He left the club just as the 2023/24 season was about to kick off.
12. Paul Heckingbottom
Heckingbottom was dismissed by Sheffield United in early December, with the Blades facing a genuine danger of getting relegated. He was replaced by Chris Wilder, who came in for a second spell with The Blades.

Football13. Steve Cooper
Cooper is the last manager to be dismissed in 2023 in the Premier League, as cited on BBC.
He received his marching orders on December 19 as Nottingham Forest sought a more experienced manager in the form of Nuno Espirito Santo to save them from relegation.
De Zerbi’s reaction to Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham
Sports Brief also reported Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi’s viral reaction after learning that Arsenal were beaten at home in the Premier League.
In a controversial London derby, Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by West Ham at the Emirates Stadium, and one Premier League manager could not believe it when he heard.
The Gunners could have ascended to the top of the table if they had secured a win, but a culmination of VAR controversy and a poor performance condemned them to a defeat.
