In the last few weeks, there have been discussions about whether Burnley striker Lyle Foster will be included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos left him out of the final 23-man squad for the tournament set to kick off early next month.

Foster was included in the 50-man provisional squad, and it was unlikely that he would be named in the final squad for Ivory Coast.

He missed seven Premier League games for Burnley for personal reasons and missed last month's World Cup qualifiers.

Clarets boss Vincent Kompany recently said he wasn't sure if his striker would be in Ivory Coast for the tournament.

“It’s not even my decision, it’s not up to me. He just can’t. It’s the medical advice we’re getting at the moment,” he said via Burnley Express.

A few days later, Kompany added that Foster couldn't go to AFCON.

“Unfortunately at the moment he’s not in a position where he can go to the national team, he just can’t,” Kompany said at a press conference on Thursday, ahead of their fixture against Everton," via iDiski Times.

The 23-year-old striker has scored three goals in 11 appearances for Burnley this season.

Bross on Foster's omission

Speaking while naming the squad, the Belgian tactician explain why Foster missed out.

"It was impossible for Lyle to be selected for AFCON, I repeat it was impossible. It was a medical decision. Lyle Foster wrote a letter to SAFA requesting he doesn't want to be at AFCON. I'm not happy that he's not there, but again this is a medical decision," via iDiski Times.

Foster made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2018 and has so far made 10 appearances for the national team.

Bafana are in Group E alongside Namibia, Tunisia and Mali. They're looking to win their first AFCON title since 1996.

Broos omits Foster from AFCON squad

Sports Brief earlier reported on South Africa coach Hugo Broos naming the final squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament.

The squad consists of 23 full selections and three standby players. Broos said before naming the team that he wanted more rest time for the players.

Players will assemble on January 4 and leave for Cape Town the following day before flying to the Ivory Coast on January 10. Percy Tau, Themba Zwane, and Ronwen Williams were included in the squad.
