  • Inter Milan sold Andre Onana to Manchester United a year after signing him for free
  • The club also sold long-serving midfielder Marcelo Brozovic to Saudi Pro League
  • A recent analysis has exposed that the sales saved the club from going bankrupt

Inter Milan are dealing with deep financial issues and faces an uncertain future if it continues, but bought more time with the funds recouped from the sale of two players.

Inter finished in the top four of Italian Serie A last season, won the Coppa Italia and reached the UEFA Champions League final, which they lost to Manchester City.

The finances and continuity of the club remain threatened despite these achievements and were saved by player sales last season, particularly Andre Onana and Marcelo Brozovic.

Per BBC Sports, the Nerazzurri sold Onana to Manchester United for €55 million a year after signing him for free from Ajax. They sold the Croatian midfielder to Al-Nassr for €17.5mil.

How player sales saved Inter Milan

Per an analysis from Italian outlet Il Giornale, the club were on the brink of bankruptcy, but the funds (€72.5m) from the sales of Onana and Brozovic eased the worries and ensured continued existence.

The blue and red side of Milan made €85.4mil loss, down from €140mil in 2022 and a Serie A record €245.6mil in 2021 – this despite cutting cost by 11.8%, but revenues dipped by -3.2%.

The revenue dip stemmed from their lack of a main sponsor on their shirt for last season before having Paramount in front of the shirt for the Champions League final, which brought €4.05m for the final alone.

Inter’s debt stands at €807mil, down from 881 the previous year, as the club’s parent company reported a negative net worth of €161.9m, meaning their assets can not cover liabilities.

Per Sempre Inter, InvestCorp offered €1.3 billion to Suning Group to buy the club in September.

United to help Chelsea's clearout

Sports Brief previously analysed how Manchester United can help Chelsea get rid of Lukaku in a transfer domino effect if they sign a player from Inter Milan.

The Blues have told Inter that they would be willing to part ways with the striker for €40m. United are interested in goalkeeper Andre Onana, whom Nerazzurri valued at €50m, which could raise funds to transfer the Belgian striker.

The transfer was not completed after Lukaku blacked out Inter’s calls after an agreement was reached with Chelsea, and he joined AS Roma on loan instead.
