FootballAFCON 2023: Tunisia Name Final 27 Man Squad, Man United Star Snubbed
- Tunisia's final 27-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is set
- Veteran forward Youssef Msakni will lead the team after Wahbi Khazri's retirement
- The North Africans reached the quarter-finals in the last edition
Tunisia have named their final 27-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Manchester United star Hannibal Mejbri has missed out.
The Eagles of Carthage are taking part in their 16th straight Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Jalel Kadri's side will be looking to win their first title since lifting it on home soil in 2004. The final squad include some new faces that missed the 2022 World Cup.
With veteran forward Wahbi Khazri retired, the legendary Youssef Msakni will lead Tunisia in Cote d'Ivoire. He could clock 100 caps.
Tunisia are one of the most consistent sides in African football. In the 2022 edition, they knocked out favourites Nigeria in Cameroon. They are in Group E, along with Namibia, South Africa, and Mali.
They will be buoyed by their stunning 1-0 over two-time World Cup champions France in Qatar last year.
Teams with the most to prove at AFCON
Sports Brief earlier reported on Cote d'Ivoire making the list of African national teams with the most to prove in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite having some of the best African talent over the years, the North Africans have struggled to make a mark in Africa's biggest football tournament.
Ghana and Nigeria are the other teams that will be expected to go all the way since they have produced some of Africa's best players.
Broos omits Foster from AFCON squad
Sports Brief earlier reported on South Africa coach Hugo Broos naming the final squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament.
The squad consists of 23 full selections and three standby players. Broos said before naming the team that he wanted more rest time for the players.
Players will assemble on January 4 and leave for Cape Town the following day before flying to the Ivory Coast on January 10. Percy Tau, Themba Zwane, and Ronwen Williams were included in the squad.
