Mauricio Pochettino called on the youngest-ever Chelsea squad in a Premier League game to secure a much-needed 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

The exclusion of 39-year-old veteran defender Thiago Silva from the starting lineup means the team had an average age of 23 years and 284 days, the eighth youngest ever in the league.

1. Middlesbrough vs Fulham 2006

Per BBC, Steve McLaren lined up the youngest side in the league in his final game in charge of Boro before taking over the England national team. The team had an average age of 20 years and 181 days and were defeated with an 84th-minute penalty by Heidar Helguson.

2. Arsenal vs Portsmouth 2009

Legendary manager Arsene Wenger was reputable for playing young players. He lined up Arsenal’s most youthful PL squad at 22 years 237 days against Portsmouth in 2009 and comfortably won 3-0. Niklas Bendtner scored twice, and Carlos Vela got the other.

3. Manchester United vs Crystal 2017

Surprisingly, Jose Mourinho named Manchester United’s youngest-ever Premier League squad at 22 years 284 days for the visit of Crystal Palace to Old Trafford. Young winger Josh Harrop scored on his debut, and Paul Pogba scored the other goal.

4. Arsenal vs Sunderland 2008

In the final game of the 2007/08 season, Wenger put out Arsenal’s youngest squad against Sunderland before breaking the record a year later. The team with an average age of 22 years and 315 days won 1-0 thanks to Theo Walcott’s first-half strike.

5. Leeds vs Manchester United 2000

Leeds United lined up a squad with an average age of 22 years and 341 days for the Roses Rivalry in October 2000 and were beaten 3-0 by Sir Alex Ferguson’s United.

Pochettino admits Chelsea job difficult

Sports Brief reported on Pochettino admitting Chelsea’s job is more difficult than he initially thought before taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking ahead of their much-needed 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, the Argentine claimed injuries made the job more strenuous as the team is far from its target.
