Sports Brief looks at the top four players he sold who are now thriving away from the Emirates.

Former Arsenal players thriving this season

1. Granit Xhaka

The Swiss midfielder got a new lease of life when Arteta came in 2019. After being an integral part of the title run last season, he left to join Bayer Leverkusen and has helped the team to the top of the Bundesliga table. Per Squawka, he has made the most passes into the final third this season in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The former captain left on acrimonious terms after he was initially stripped of his captaincy due to disciplinary issues. He joined Barcelona and won a league title despite appearing in just a game before his sale to Chelsea. He is currently at Olympique Marseille and has 12 goals this season. Per Goal, Arteta denied any issues with him.

3. Emiliano Martinez

Dibu, as he is famously referred to, was in goal for Arsenal’s only major trophy under Arteta. He left to join Aston Villa and became Argentina’s number 1, winning the World Cup and Copa America. He has helped the team to the Premier League top four under former boss Unai Emery.

4. Bernd Leno

Leno was displaced by English goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and he opted for a move across London to join Fulham. Per Planet Football, he prevented nine goals last season, the best tally in the league. He has kept five clean sheets this season, one less than David Raya.

Leno hits out at Arteta

Sports Brief reported on Leno hitting out at Arteta after the Arsenal boss teased the idea of tactically substituting his goalkeeper for games to balance the minutes between Raya and Ramsdale.

Leno, whose time at Arsenal was ended by Arteta, slammed his former boss, claiming it doesn't help goalkeepers and that he would never do that if he were a manager.
