An ugly embarrassment has befallen the DStv Premiership.

Moroka Swallows have pulled out of the fixture with league leaders and continental powerhouses Mamelodi Sundowns over a protracted wage dispute.

The player's strike will affect not only the fixture against Masandawana, but Saturday's fixture with Golden Arrows has also been called off.

In a statement released by Swallows CEO Sipho Xulu outlined the reasons for the cancellation. The statement read:

"On behalf of Moroka Swallows FC, an apology is extended to all affected parties due to the cancellation of the following games against Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Golden Arrows FC."

Previous fixtures had been under threat as players and management were still at loggerheads over unpaid salaries.

Swallows' chairman, David Mogashoa, stated that all amounts owed had been paid and that measures were in place to ensure that the difficulties would not arise again.

CEO Xulu's statement continued:

"Management would like to assure everyone within and outside the club that the process of finding one another will soon be found. It has been resolved that no further details will be officially given until an update from the club is issued."

Clubs face hefty fines for such late cancellations, an outcome that could worsen Swallows' financial troubles, as reported by CityPress.

Fortunately, the league takes a six-week break, giving the club's hierarchy a chance to rectify the situation and avoid Swallows falling further down the DStv Premiership table.

Moroka Swallows chair claims strike resolved

Sports Brief recently reported that Moroka Swallows' player strike had been resolved, according to David Mogashoa.

Steve Komphela confirmed after their defeat to SuperSport United that the players had not been training in the week before the match.

The club have come perilously close to extinction before, having gone bankrupt, only to be saved by politician Panyaza Lesufi.
