- Onana returned to the team ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations
Cameroon’s quest to win a fifth Africa Cup of Nations is in disarray as Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o are still at loggerheads.
The pair have not seen eye to eye since both parties fell out during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which led to Onana’s premature retirement from the national team.
According to Sports News Africa, the rift between Onana and Eto’o could derail Cameroon’s unity heading to the 2023 AFCON, which could be tantamount to destroying their hopes of winning the competition.
The Manchester United goalkeeper announced his return to the national team weeks before the start of the AFCON after talks with the Cameroon Sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi.
Cameroon, who are the second-highest winners of the AFCON, have been paired alongside Senegal, Gambia and Guinea in Group C and will aim to go a step higher than the bronze medal they won in the last edition.
Cameroon government Influenced Onana’s return
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Andre Onana’s decision to return to the Cameroon national team was influenced by the country’s Sports minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, BSN sports reports.
The Manchester United goalie had called it quits with the national team in 2022 after he was sent home from the World Cup before having to reconsider his decision after talks with his country’s government.
Onana’s wealth of experience will be key for the Indomitable Lions as they push to secure a fifth continental title as the Manchester United goalkeeper has made 34 appearances for Cameroon to date.
