- The competition will kick off on January 13, with Ivory Coast facing Guinea-Bissau
Manchester City legend Yaya Toure has ignored the Super Eagles of Nigeria and others as he disclosed his four favourite teams to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations title.
The biggest football event will kick off on January 13, 2024, with 24 teams battling for the title in Ivory Coast.
Top teams like Senegal, Nigeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, and Cameroon will all participate in the tournament, but other countries could cause upset for the top sides.
In an interview with Forbes Afrique as per Afrique Sports, Toure has ignored the host nation (his country) alongside Super Eagles, Cameroon, Ghana and a host of others as he chooses his favourite teams to win the competition.
"It is normal to have a preference for your own country. Ivory Coast have a strong team and many talented and experienced players,," he said.
The former Barcelona midfielder also disclosed the reason behind his choice of teams.
"But if I had to choose the teams I think are favourites, I would say Senegal (defending champions), Morocco, Guinea-Bissau and South Africa. They had an impressive qualifying campaign," he added.
Egypt are also one of the favourites to win the competition with the presence of Liverpool star Mohammed Salah, and Arsenal midfielder Mohammed El Neny in their ranks.
Nigeria legend Adepoju names AFCON favourites
Sports Brief previously reported that three African powerhouses have been tipped by Super Eagles legend Mutiu Adepoju as the favourites to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to kick off in Ivory Coast next year.
Senegal will aim to defend the title they won two years ago as the continent's 24 best teams get set to contest Africa’s biggest football prize from January 13 to February 11.
According to Punch, the former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju, who won the tournament with Nigeria in 1994, believes the AFCON 2023 title will come down to one of three countries.
