Boxing Day was originally meant to be a day of unwrapping gifts just after Christians worldwide had marked Christmas - the day when Jesus Christ was born.

But for Premier League League fans, it comes in the form of riveting top-flight matches - a tradition that began away back in 1888 when Bolton Wanderers played Derby County and Preston North End visited West Brom.

Boxing Day fixtures

Arsenal headed into Christmas leading the table following their resilient performance at Anfield to come out with a point. It is the second successive year they lead the table on December 25 and Mikel Arteta will be hoping to lead at the end of the season as well.

The main highlight of the Boxing Day fixtures of this year will see Aston Villa visit a beleaguered Manchester United. Villa are firmly in the title race as it stands, with only a point separating them from Arsenal.

But who are the top scorers in the Premier League fixtures played on December 26? Harry Kane made this day his yardstick during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

For a man who struggled for quite some time to score in August, banging in ten goals in his seven appearances on the specific day of December 26 in his Spurs career was ironic. No player has more on Boxing Day.

The second all-time goalscorer in the premier league, who joined Bayern Munich at the start of this season, netted against Brentford last year to move clear at the top. The top-scorer of all time got eight of 262 goals on Boxing Day.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry grabbed a hat trick against Leicester City on December 26, 2000, while Robbie Fowler needed only four minutes and 33 seconds to complete a hat trick.

Kane's record might be in place for a while, considering that no one in the top 10 is still an active player. Let's see who makes the cut then.

Kane sets Ballon d’Or target

Sports Brief previously reported that Kane has set Ballon d’Or targets for himself after moving to Germany despite missing out on a trophy in his opening game for the club.

Kane believes he scores enough goals to be in contention and the only thing missing in silverware. He will be in the conversation for the award if he wins them.
