FootballEric Tinkler: Cape Town City Coach Discloses the Tactics He Used to Stop Mamelodi Sundowns
- Eric Tinkler has reacted to Cape Town City's goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns
- The Citizens are the first team to stop the Brazilians from winning in the PSL this season
- The Blue and Gold Army are third on the league table behind SuperSports and Sundowns
Cape Town City manager Eric Tinkler explained his tactics in stopping Mamelodi Sundowns in their Premier Soccer League clash on Sunday, December 24.
The Citizen forced the Brazilians to a goalless draw at the Cape Town Stadium this weekend.
The PSL defending champions were on a winning run but dropped points for the first time this season against the Blue and Gold Army.
Tinkler, who was the mastermind behind Cape Town City's stellar performance, disclosed the approach he took in putting an end to Sundowns' winning run, according to a report by Soccer Laduma.
"Very simple, as I said to you before, you are one-nil down when the game starts; that is the best way, he said.
"You watch the matches that we analysed, [most] teams sit back, and they allow them to come, and [Mamelodi] Sundowns, with the quality that they have, will hurt you [with that type of approach].
"So we decided that we will be looking at going at them. When I watched those clips, AmaZulu was 1-0 down, and all of a sudden, they were back in the match; why? Because they started pressing, so I think if you press them, you can be fortunate."
Cape Town City are still third on the PSL table with eight points behind league leaders Sundowns, and three points behind second-place SuperSports United.
