FootballFKF Premier League: Gor Mahia Coach Johnathan McKinstry Not Getting Carried Away by Unbeaten Streak
- Johnathan McKinstry has taken note of the mounting pressure on his team
- Gor Mahia are currently unbeaten in 16 games in the FKF Premier League
- K’Ogalo lead the league standings with 34 points after 16 games
Gor Mahia's head coach, Johnathan McKinstry is not getting carried away by his team’s impressive form.
So far, the perennial Kenyan champions have held an impressive 16-game undefeated run in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League.
In a hard-fought match against Bandari FC at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Friday, December 22, 2023, K’Ogalo clinched a narrow 1-0 victory, bringing joy to fans and players, but also a growing burden of expectation, according to McKinstry.
"This group hasn't tasted defeat since June, bringing its own pressures. Every team facing K'Ogalo wants to make a statement, grab a win, and be in the headlines," McKinstry is quoted on Pulse Sports.
Gor Mahia's remarkable unbeaten streak has thrust them into the limelight each game. Consequently, the target on their backs becomes more prominent.
"The pressure mounts when you're on an unbeaten streak because every team aims to be the one to end it. We acknowledge that someday it will end, but for us, it's about staying focused and not getting carried away," the coach notes.
Gor Mahia's journey this season has been exceptional, amassing an impressive 34 points in 16 matches, with nine wins and seven draws. Their solid defence has only conceded seven goals,
McKinstry has always expressed confidence in his position in the club, crushing rumours about a possible departure even after winning the league in the 2022/23 season.
"We are ahead of schedule, when I came here it was not about winning the league this season. We said we wanted to win the league in January, but we understood where we were off the field. The transfer ban, transfer issues and a lot of things off the field were to be solved. I came in and it was a multi of projects to get us back to being champions," the 38-year-old says as reported by People Daily.
