  • Arsenal went into Christmas at the top of the Premier League table
  • The Gunners cemented their lead at the top after a 1-1 draw at Liverpool
  • Only a point is separating Arsenal at the top and second-placed Liverpool

Arsenal are basking in glory ahead of the second half of the 2023/24 season as they plot another stab at Premier League glory.

The Gunners are topping the standings at Christmas for the second season running under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta.

The North Londoners cemented their lead at the top on Saturday following their draw with title rivals, Liverpool.

According to The Guardian, the two teams played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Gabriel Magalhaes and Mohamed Salah finding the back of the net.

The result was enough to ensure Arsenal will be top of the table at Christmas, albeit by a single point.

This will be music to the ears of the Gunners' supporters, with this eventuality often associated with a better chance of tasting glory.

History of teams topping the table at Christmas

According to The Mirror, the team that is top at Christmas often goes on to win the Premier League title.

Historically, in 10 of the last 14 seasons, teams that were leading the log during this period went on to lift the crown.

Key among those teams include Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Leicester City.

However, last season was somewhat different as City beat Arsenal to the title despite the latter enjoying a comfortable lead at the top.

At the time, Arteta's charges had a five-point advantage at the top but fell short in their attempt to keep up with the momentum.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are the other side who have previously failed to lift the title at the end of the season despite being top at Christmas.

The Reds have replicated this scenario on five occasions, the most by any team in the history of the Premier League.

Below is a list of the teams that topped the table at Christmas and the eventual title winners:

Why Odegaard wasn't penalised for handball

Sports Brief has also reported that Odegaard turned in the penalty area and as he attempted to play the ball, he slipped and visibly grabbed it.

The referees' body, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), explained that Odegaard's arm was moving towards his body after he slipped, not the ball.

But what do the Laws of the Game say about handballs and the awarding of penalties?
