FootballHow Football Kenya Federation Spent $11.1 Million Funding From FIFA
- Kenya received a total of $9.1 million between 2016 and 2022 from FIFA
- The funds are part of the Forward Development Programme
- The bulk of the funds went to equipment and administration
FIFA recently released the figures of the Forward Development Programme and what every member association received.
Kenya was entitled to $11.1 million, but FIFA approved $9.1 million between 2016 and 2022. The East African nation desperately needs the fund to improve their football.
The funds were spent on equipment ($4.7mil), administration and governance ($1.7mil), national teams ($1.5mil), capacity development ($0.5mil), women’s football ($0.5mil), competitions ($0.2mil), and infrastructure ($0.1mil).
Kenyan football authorities put major emphasis on the improvement of women's football in that period, which saw the Kenyan Women's Premier League and the Women Division 1 League, according to FIFA.
The Harambee Starlets made their debut in the Women's AFCON in 2016 but have struggled to replicate that achievement in the last few years.
However, they have made tremendous progress amidst almost insurmountable odds along the way.
Kenyan football struggles
The women's team has made giant strides, but the men's side have struggled for consistency.
Despite being a regional powerhouse, Kenya has qualified for the African Cup of Nations twice in the 21st century, which is underwhelming considering the talent and investment that have been made.
Kenya has played in just six AFCON tournaments in their history (1972, 1988, 1990, 1992, 2004, 2019).
Harambee stars will watch the 2024 AFCON from home once again, highlighting yet another failure of the men's senior team.
Their next target will be the 2025 AFCON. Kenya are still looking to qualify for their first-ever World Cup tournament. They are third in Group F of the qualifiers after two games.
